G TANO + DAKINI CUDDLE

G Tano is back in Northcote, and this time teaming up with another new sensation in town, Dakini Cuddle.
Dreamy atmospheres and sexy grooves are on the menu, for a delightful night at the only Bar 303!

G TANO

The band, born in 2022 in Naarm/Melbourne, is the organic consequence of the continuous exchange between different cultures and music philosophies of these well seasoned musicians, navigating old school Funk rhythms, Acid Jazz atmosphere, with a touch of Mediterranean Fusion and a hint of Hendrix vibes.
Stefano, seasoned funk 'veteran', after 2 decades of travelling and working in music, rooted his music idea in Melbourne, where he started exploring new sounds and music landscapes, along with the incredibly talented poly-instrumentalist from Indonesia, Gandhi, the well known funk machine Tim on the Bass and the new addition, a doctor of Jazz, Hong from Korea on the keys/synth.

DAKINI CUDDLE

Dakini Cuddle is a neon soular panel jazz funk piece that embraces a magical phenomenon of blending the forces of both unknown and very well known together. Tis very fresh to Naarm’s music scene and involves the sounds of Tyla Moonchild on vocals and guitar, Rory Wilson on bass, Gabe Coleman on keys and Oliver George on drums.

Door - 8pm

Robbie Melville Quartet

The Robbie Melville Quartet is the latest project from the guitarist and composer, winner of the Instrumental Category of the 2018 International Song Competition. With the sympathetic rhythm section of bassist Tamara Murphy and drummer Maddison Carter, and featuring Zoe Knighton on cello, the quartet explore a juxtaposition of heavily structured arrangements with free spirited extemporisation, informed in equal measure by contemporary jazz and Norwegian folk, the sparse and playful writings of Richard Brautigan, the photography of Viktor Kolář, the film soundtracks of Mark Orton. Delicate, humourous, ethereal, intimate and quirky.

While subtly evading expectations, Robbie Melville loads his music with a restrained melancholy conveying innocence rather than knowingness, the upshot being an unusual emotional ambiguity blending resignation and contentment”. - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Beautifully recorded, Tangled Trails faithfully captures Melville as poet and storyteller, spinning sonic fictions - Des Cowley, Rhythms Magazine

Barry/Sherlock/Fischer

Hailed by Loudmouth Magazine as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers”, Barry’s work oscillates between contemporary jazz, musical theatre, free improvisation and art music. His recent album In The Waves features drummer Eric Harland (USA), and was praised by the Sydney Morning Herald as "...the finest instalment to date of the pianist’s bristling musical intelligence, rhythmic mutability, melodic flair and compositional gifts."

James Sherlock is one of Australia's most in-demand guitarists, regularly working with a host of local and international artists from Kate Ceberano, Megan Washington to Sheila Jordan, Cyrille Aimee, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Jon Riley (USA). The winner of the Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award, James has released six albums of original music and been praised by All About Jazz as "...a wonderful guitarist and a craftsman of songs possessing beauty and depth".

Danny Fischer is one of the most in demand and highly sought after freelance jazz drummers and educators currently working in Australia. There is scarcely a jazz musician in Australia that Danny has not worked with at one time or another.

Pinko Collective

Pinko Collective is a community organisation that aims to help build a strong community and support postive mental health. It does this by connecting people through music.

The goal is simple. Join us to watch or participate in one of our six weekly gatherings where local musicians, both accomplished and amateur, get up to showcase a small set of songs infront of a supportive audience.

It was born our of the Westgarth Idol - a fundraising event for Westgarth Primary - over 15 years ago and is made up of people who are both directly and indirectly linked to local school communities.

Got a song you've always wanted to sing?

As it's a collective, we have a bunch of willing collaborators for any song you may have in mind, so please contact us if you have something in mind you'd like to do?

We're not an open-mic, or a karaoke session, but if you have a direct or indirect link to members of the Collective, you can contact us to play! We particularly encourage women to put their hands up!

Our aim is to build social connection across the community using music as a means to gather together regularly.

Free entry.

Drop in for a pint or for a squiz of the live music.

Come and enjoy the loungey, Saturday arvo vibe! xxxx

The Jawa Pitu Band

You could loosely describe the Jawa Pitu Band as a 'world music', as we predominantly play dangdut — music from 1970s Indonesia which is a heady mix of Hindustani, Malay, Arabic and Western music. We play our own version of dangdut with additional inspiration from western jazz/groove and also Indonesian gamelan music. With 3 percussionists in the band, we also have have strong influences from African and Middle Eastern rhythms.

Manix & Able8 - Straitjackets For The Uninspired EP launch

Manix & Able8 are on the brink of unleashing 'Straitjackets For The Uninspired’, a six-track EP that was gradually conspired between years of projects together, pieced together like a complex jigsaw puzzle.

Within this release, Manix skilfully intertwines lyrics that are infused with undertones of self-deprecation and sarcasm, painting a narrative that explores the shadowy realms of mental health struggles and addiction. Each verse flows seamlessly to accompany the tones set by Producer Able8, who's compositions bring haunting soundscapes of thickly stacked synths and thumping drums, over saturated analogue bass lines.

'Straitjackets For The Uninspired' also showcases the lush voice of Selki on ‘Losing Sleep, alongside co-productions from Phillip Drummond and U-Wish. Plus be sure to look out for the imminent drop of the groups first video single 'Bad Karma', featuring razor sharp flows from Joe Snow.

Join us on April 13th at Bar 303, where we have organised a stacked line-up of local talent to help celebrate the launch of this project.

Katankin/ Joyce Prescher/ Kris Mizzi

"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." - Leonard Cohen

Join three of Melbourne's great folk singer-songwriters for an evening of song - journey with them through the mundane, the lofty, and the soul-crushing darkness, into the deep to search for the cracks where those glimmers of light can be found.

8pm - Katankin

“Would you give a stranger the time of day, for something old said in a new way?”
Melbourne folk singer-songwriter Katankin’s recent single “In a new way”, the first off her upcoming debut album, humbly asks this question, in an infectious, upbeat and joyful celebration of finding one’s own voice.

Born of Russian and Romanian migrant parents, and with a difficult, often harrowing family history, Katankin’s music is nevertheless an ode and testament to love, faith, and ultimately, hope. With her achingly pure and expressive voice, and poetic writing rich with imagery, she unflinchingly plumbs the darkest depths of the human condition – wading through despair, loathing, fear, rage, and revenge, and then soaring to its greatest, sun-drenched heights.

Although a newcomer on the Australian folk scene, Katankin has already begun making her mark, with her 2022 self-produced debut EP "The quiet shimmer of the world" garnering a Music Victoria nomination for Best Folk Work last year, alongside several well-established acts. She is currently working on her debut album, slated for release later this year.

9pm Joyce Prescher

Joyce Prescher's music is a heartfelt blend of Americana and folk that has been making waves in the music scene. Her debut album 'Home' was met with critical acclaim, landing a spot in PBS's top ten albums upon release.

Her latest release 'Out Of My Mind', which was released under record label 'Cheersquad Records & Tapes', is a 13-track masterpiece that has charted in both the ARIA Top 20 Australian Country Albums and the Australian Independent Record Labels Association 100% Independent Albums chart.

Joyce's music has an intimacy that warms over you and inspires repeat listens, with nods to artists like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen while also being contemporary. She has toured with many Australian favorites and was a finalist in the 2022 and 2023 Australian Folk Music Awards.

10pm - Kris Mizzi

Winner of 2017 Troubadour Award as well as 2021 Folk Alliance 'Australian Solo Artist of the Year', Melbourne Singer/Songwriter Khristian Mizzi is making waves throughout the Folk circuit across the country.

More than just a few have said that "Khristian Mizzi's songs take them to a place they'd forgotten in themselves". Well crafted stories which draw hopeful and heartwarming wisdoms found in the people and places we experience.
With a 'strong and gentle' voice, and an art for weaving beauty and truth into the words of each song, Khristian Mizzi reaches the hearts of his audiences with performances that are joyful, uplifting, confronting, spiritual, comedic and vulnerable all at once.

He has been described by other musicians as having 'one of Australia's finest voices' leaving listeners feeling as though they have experienced something truly special. Poetic lyrics, meandering melodies and 'a voice which truly moves people', along with a unique picking style, Mizzi really is a complete artist and is becoming renowned for his intimate performances and thoughtful songs, throughout the country.
