Bringing together a special line-up of world-class selectors and live performers playing through Melbourne's own picó sound system, Barrio Trópico NYE will undoubtably be the party of the year.

NORISCAA (SOUNDWAY/UK)

Alice Whittington a.k.a. Norsicaa is a DJ, producer and label manager for the respected independent record label Soundway Records. She hosts a monthly music show on Soho Radio and monthly interview series on Foundation FM, focusing on womxn in music.

FRANKIE FRANCIS (SOFRITO/UK)

Frankie is devoted to audio engineering at The Carvery and also spends his time producing records with the almighty Sofrito Sound crew. They are also responsible for one of London's hottest nights, the praised "Republic of Sofrito" featuring amazing afro tropical bands, DJ's and producers.

SAI GALAXY - LIVE (SOUNDWAY)

As the name suggests, Sai Galaxy represents a star-studded cluster of artists from around the world – their varied styles colliding to form a refreshing fusion of classic Afrobeat, disco and West African funk. Drawing from the influence of 70s and 80s Nigerian artists such as Nkono Teles, Jake Sollo and Mike Umoh, the Sai Galaxy collective is on a mission to reproduce the analogue warmth and groove from those decades. 

MC KAIMÁN JIMENEZ (AMARU TRIBE/COL)

MC Kaimán Jimenez AKA Oscar Jimenez is a local musical force, borned Barranquillero, and embodiment of picó culture here in Australia. Also know as producer and leader of popular Latin alternative bands such as Watussi and Amaru Tribe, with whom he has released several albums and received awards and Nominations plus opened for artist such as Santana, Seun Kuti, Manu Chao, Earth Wind and Fire and more. He has performed as part of El Gran Mono familia at WOMADelaide, Rising (Heavy Congress), Vivid Sydney, and regular parties including Sound System Giants.

CARLO XAVIER (ANALOG AFRICA/OTHER WORLDS OTHER SOUNDS)

Carlo Xavier is a DJ and picótero dedicated to the future of music, curating high energy sets which explore modern sounds grounded in deep foundational influences. His Portuguese family heritage has nurtured Carlo’s profound appreciation for Lusofonic and complex rhythms, and his record digging trips across Northern Brazil and Colombia have seen Carlo compile music for the cult label Analog Africa, including Jambú, Camarão, contributing to Los Diablos Del Ritmo releases. Previously supporting artists such as Ray Lugo (US), Frikstailers (MEX), Criolina (BR), Mo Horizons (GER), Carlo is also a co-producer for Other Words Other Sounds, and a key member of El Gran Mono familia, performing with the picó at Womadelaide, Rising (Heavy Congress), Vivid, and Spilt Milk in 2022.

CASSAWARRIOR (NZ)

DJ Cassawarrior is a former adopted musical son of Melbourne now based back in his home of Aotearoa (NZ). A record collector who has spent many a dusty month digging up rare Afro/Tropical gems in East & West Africa and the Caribbean, with a culturally immersed ‘boots on the ground’ approach. Originally a musician, he has played bass guitar touring with the likes of Ethiopian music greats Mulatu Astatke, Mahmoud Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete. Cassawarrior has also been a DJ regular at Glastonbury Festival as well as radio presenter on Melbourne’s very own PBS 106.7 fm.

JOLIE DE VOGUE

Maria Gallo A.K.A Jolie De Vogue is A Colombian DJ based in Melbourne. Her musical selections include Champeta, Cumbia, Techno Merengue, Ragga & Dancehall amongst many Afro descendant rhythms that connect and define the history between the continent of Africa and the Americas. Jolie has research the African Diaspora in relationship to South American rhythms and has a broad collection of records that help narrate and understand this piece of the puzzle, specifically within her own Caribbean background.

GENERAL FEELINGS

Lucreccia Quintanilla AKA General Feelings is a New York born Salvadoran artist living in Naarm whose work includes amongst many things DJing, running General Feelings sound system. Regardless of the outcome Lucreccia’s work always comes from her deep love of music which she inherited form her family, especially her grandfather and aunt who were both cumbia musicians in El Salvador.

EL GRAN MONO

El Gran Mono is the first picó sound system built outside Colombia, and features artwork by the great sound system artist William “El Maestro” Gutierrez.The Caribbean coast of Colombia is known as the origin of the picó sound system culture, which stretches back to the 1930’s when valve radios would be decorated in paint or chalk and blast the broadcast of Radio Barranquilla from people’s home. The 1970’s to 1980’s are often referred to as the “Golden-era” of picó, with giant elaborately decorated systems playing regularly throughout cities such as Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta.
