Embrace the sorcery 🐾

Melbourne's most cherished sonic mystery I Hold the Lion's Paw return to redefine the word jazz once more and celebrate their latest live EP at The Night Cat 🌜🐱

Conjuring evil spirits with their iconic twisted funk and electro-grunge grooves with an entourage of surprise guests, Lion’s Paw will take you on a wild sonic ride like nothing you’ve ever heard 😈

The brainchild of ARIA nominated trumpeter-producer Reuben Lewis, I Hold the Lion’s Paw is a guide into an immersive world of electro-ambience, grungy afro-grooves and psychedelic jazz that will leave you with "the feeling of having stumbled into someone else’s LSD trip” (Sydney Morning Herald). This is music as assemblage, using the stage as a laboratory whilst practicing post-production sorcery in realtime. With two highly acclaimed studio albums under their belt, Lion’s Paw return with 3x3, a mind-blowing live vinyl offering made entirely at Program Records that showcases two of Melbourne’s most powerful artists, Didem Caia and Emily Bennett.

3x3 follows on from their APRA Art Music Award nominated studio album, Lost in Place, and is the first in an exciting series of limited edition vinyl releases recorded, filmed and pressed at Program Records. Side A, This Body is a Compass, features iconic Melbourne poet, Didem Caia, and is a psalm for modern times that blends notions of the human body with the body of the earth. Side B, Big Bois, showcases the enigmatic and witty artistry of experimental musician Emily Bennett in full flight atop the signature Lion’s Paw mix of slippery grooves and psychedelic interludes.

Among the many specials guest joining Lion’s Paw at the Night Cat will be members of Tony Yap Company, a collective of culturally diverse movement artists who's vision is to create a multi-modal form that transforms ancient shamanistic practice into a post-modern medium.

Supporting Lion’s Paw will be co-conspirators in the dark sonic arts, Firetail. Their music spans from 70’s jazz-fusion, South Indian Carnatic music and Melbourne's very own brand of jazz-tronica. Formed in 2018 as a collaborative recording project, Firetail has developed an ambient approach to song-writing that blends soul-infused rhythms with evocative melodies and driving percussion. From the bands earliest days playing warehouse parties and monthly dive bar residencies, the group has continued to push musical boundaries by collaborating with a wide variety of guest vocalist and instrumentalist. The result is colliding compositions that never stays in the box for long.

We acknowledge that this event will be held on Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nation and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
