The Boite and 3ZZZ present POLYFONIX, featuring:

Public Opinion Afro Orchestra
+
Queen of Hearts Mariachi

With DJ Dr PopaLotaCorn

Thursday 17 November at The Night Cat

Authentically Melbourne, Polyfonix at the Night Cat is a show to celebrate the richness of Melbourne’s diverse talent and capacity to party. Produced by The Boite and 3ZZZ community radio it will showcase the liveliest and most cherished Melbourne whom we have missed so much over the last two years.

Inspired by the infectious afro-beat music of Nigeria and its neighbours, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra delivers contemporary African funk to Australian dancefloors. The band’s powerful MCs and tribal rhythms are the modern-day “musical weapon” that Fela Kuti conceived of. Their conscious lyrics and West African grooves are relevant today, while remaining faithful to the message of afro-beat.

Queen of Hearts Mariachi evoke an ultimately new perspective on what Mariachi Music can be: all women, all original. Violins, Big Bass, Trumpets, Flowers, Hats, and pants. And some kick-arse harmonies that will leave you breathless. Led by Stefania Serna and Elizabeth Obando and Bonnie Smith, this is an inspired 6-piece Mariachi destined to restore your faith in humanity.

Special guest DJ Dr PopaLotaCorn will serve up an eclectic audio smorgasbord of global delights, from cumbia to calypso, Somalian funk to Brazilian Carimbo, Egyptian surf to Armenian disco. But who needs labels? Your feet will thank you.

Polyfonix is one of several events produced as part of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s partnership with Creative Victoria’s On The Road Again initiative, connecting Victorian community radio with the state’s live music scene.

We acknowledge that this event will be held on Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nation and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
